Story-Telling with Food at the Good Food and Wine Show

Good Food & Wine Show logoThe Good Food and Wine Show 2013 happens next week (23-26 May 2013) with a host of interesting food demonstrations and opportunities to taste delicious food and buy foodie products. A new addition to the bill is the Tafelpraatjies Theatre…

At its core, food provides nutrition for the body but it also provides a conversation point and is intrinsically connected to culture. The Tafelpraatjies theatre at the Good Food and Wine Show is all about this cultural aspect of food and provides something new and spicy to the 2013 Good Food and Wine Show line-up.
Tafelpraatjies has food at its heart with a focus on the stories and conversations formed around food. As the name implies, this theatre is a look at food and stories in the Afrikaans culture.

What can you expect?

At each sitting, of about 20-30 people each, Afrikaans celebs like Sarie food blogger Isabella Niehause and published authors Dana Snyman and Johan Bakkes will share their food memories and interact with guests on topics such as ‘the secret ingredient’ and ‘favourite recipes’.

The centre of the show, of course, will be the food, and head of the Tafelpraatjies kitchen, Caro Alberts will show off her unique approach to Afrikaans cuisine. Expect variations of the traditional such as koeksisters with lemongrass and ginger syrup and pumpkin fritters in a salted caramel sauce.
There will also be cooking demonstrations with a ‘back to basics’ attitude where you can learn how to make the best marmalade, rusks and ‘padkos’ among other things.

Part of the fun at Tafelpraatjies will be the décor, which will surprise visitors by using surprising bits and bobs to match the table design to both the food and the storyteller. Perhaps the best part is that demonstrations will teach you how to achieve a quirky, classy table setting using bric-a-brac, linen, candles and other items most people have in their homes.

At each Tafelpraatjie, guests will be able to indulge in some retail therapy with items such as recipe books, linen, CD’s, jams, décor pieces and more on sale.

Tafelpraatjies promises to be an innovative, enjoyable and educational addition to the Good Food and Wine Show this year. The show runs from 23-26 May at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Tickets available at the door or from Computicket at a cost of R110 for adults and R55 for kids.
