There’s a unique new addition to the glitzy Camps Bay strip: The impressive Kove Collection has opened a premier Whiskey bar at Umi Restaurant.
Umi (which means ‘sea’ in Japanese) is an established Camps Bay haunt, serving what some consider to be the best gourmet sushi and Japanese hot cuisine in Cape Town. The restaurant itself is the most stylishly sophisticated of settings and benefits from the area’s breath-taking ocean views.
The addition of the Kove Collection’s Whisky Bar to Umi’s already winning fomula now presents a one of a kind experience for visitors, as it is one of very few whiskey bars in Cape Town, and indeed in South Africa as a whole.
Open since early October 2014, the whisky bar is located in an atmospheric alcove at the rear of the restaurant and offers a delightfully intimate experience. With its plush décor the very embodiment of decadence and sophistication, it sports velvet drapes, purple down lighters suspended from the ceiling, amazing modern Japanese themed artwork on its walls and comfortable seating.
The bar itself is stocked with over 100 varieties of some of the world’s best individually selected whiskies. Each whisky featured on the menu comes with a Jim Murray – author of the annual Whisky Bible – rating and details of its origin. The star of the menu is a Johnnie Walker King George V edition – which is the stuff legends are made of and spoken of in hushed tones by whisky aficianados.
For whisky lovers – or aspiring whisky lovers – The Umi Whisky Bar is a must visit. It is open seven nights a week and can seat 40 guests at a time.
